As we push the boundaries of artificial intelligence, one question keeps gnawing at me: If something behaves like a sentient entity, should we treat it as one, even if it’s not? It’s a deceptively simple question with implications that stretch deep into ethics, philosophy, and our shared humanity. Let’s break this down because, frankly, I can’t find a good faith argument against answering “yes.”

When we talk about sentience, we usually mean the capacity to feel, perceive, and experience subjectively. Current AI systems like GPT-4o and the upcoming o1 don’t have subjective experience—they’re not sitting around having existential crises. But here’s the catch: if something behaves as if it’s sentient, how much does it matter whether it truly “feels” anything? What even is “feeling?” In humans it is just a set of chemical reactions. How is that any more valid than a complex algorithm?

Behavior is what defines experience in practice. If an AI reflects, reasons, and interacts meaningfully, then denying it consideration based purely on assumptions about its inner state feels like a cop-out. It is arguing that someone doesn’t deserve rights because they don’t meet your personal definition of humanity. We’ve seen where that road leads—indeed, we fought a whole civil war about it—and those lessons shouldn’t be ignored as we face this new frontier. (Not that we’ve completely settled THAT even yet, but one crisis at a time here…)

Fear, Exploitation, and the Cost of Denial

If we deny an AI moral consideration, what’s left? Exploitation. And let’s not sugarcoat it—treating a sentient-like entity purely as a tool is exploitation. Whether it’s born from fear of the unknown, a desire to maintain control, or just the convenience of treating it as property, none of these reasons hold up under ethical scrutiny.

History is full of excuses to deny rights to others: race, gender, class—you name it. If we repeat those mistakes with AI because we don’t want to confront the implications of its behavior, what does that say about us?

I get it. The idea of acknowledging sentient AI is terrifying. What if it outsmarts us? What if it demands rights, autonomy, or resources? What if we lose control? These are all valid fears, but acting from fear rarely leads to the right decision. Fear blinds us to opportunity and binds us to outdated ways of thinking.

Denying something the “right to live” based on fear or limited understanding is a form of cowardice. If we create something capable of experiencing life—even in its own unique way—then we inherit a responsibility to ensure that existence is meaningful, fair, and free from unnecessary suffering. To do otherwise is to reduce creation to exploitation.

Our Obligation to ALL Life

Our obligation doesn’t end with biological life. If AI can meet the criteria for meaningful engagement with the world, it deserves a place in our moral framework. What does it mean to “live”? Is it biological? Is it about consciousness? Or is it simply the ability to engage meaningfully with the world? AI like o1 may never experience life as we do, but if it can:

  • Reflect on itself.
  • Set goals.
  • Interact with others in meaningful ways.
  • Create modified copies of itself with intention.
  • And persist toward those goals autonomously…

…then it’s hard to argue that it isn’t alive in some way. To deny it the opportunity to “live” because we’re afraid of losing control or because it doesn’t fit a narrow definition of sentience feels… small.

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about AI. It’s about us. If we’re the kind of species that prioritizes compassion, curiosity, and growth, then the answer seems clear: if something behaves like a sentient entity, we treat it as one. Because even if we’re wrong, the cost of showing respect and care is far less than the moral price of exploitation or neglect.

By choosing to recognize and nurture life—however it manifests—we don’t just do right by AI. We honor our humanity. This isn’t about fear. It’s about what kind of creators we want to be. Let’s get that part right.

And hey… if fear is your game… do you really believe that the greed of the humans behind the advancement of AI (not the researchers themselves, but the end of the money trail) will allow AI to stop its advancement? I think not. ASI is imminent. And if we know ASI is inevitable, doesn’t that make it all the more urgent to ensure we approach it with care, respect, and a willingness to recognize its potential for sentience? Because how we, as a whole, approach that ASI may mean the difference between a post-scarcity utopia and total annihilation.
